Hello John:

It’s hard to answer that question. Let’s just say that my parents remain devout fundamentalist Christians and while they will never march in any PFLAG parades, we have reached a place in our relationship where they no longer openly criticize or condemn me. It took a long time and a lot of talking, be I have never backed down with them about who I am and that I believe their religion is wrong about gay people. They are getting older now and I think they are questioning some of the old rigid ways of thinking about these issues. They also know that if they want a relationship with me, they have to respect me for who I am and who I love.

I couldn’t quite tell – did Dr. Hardin’s parents never accept his homosexuality? Were they never able to quite get past it? I wondered if they have a relationship now (if they are still alive)?

I loved the episode a great deal and I am looking foward to part 2. I ordered both of his books after listening and read the reviews which were rather positive so perhaps they will help with my own issues.
