I was actually torn by this second part of this interview. On the one hand, I wanted to feel bad for Jose. But on the other hand, even in the 70’s, gays knew they weren’t welcome in the military, yet he specifically decided to do it anyway thinking he could “hide it”. Then, very pointedly, decided not to bother hiding it. So I find it very difficult to find sympathy or empathy for doing that to HIMSELF. Yaaaay for him, he got lucky and was found “not guilty”, but at what cost? Jose comes off as proud of having manipulated the system…but (again, in my mind) manipulation is manipulation regardless of who is doing it. Sorry if anyone finds this offensive, it’s just one queers opinion.
